Considering the mega-popularity of coffee these days, we weren’t exactly taking on an obscure subject when we decided to do a short animation on the history of coffee.

However, what we didn’t know going in was that the story would involve smuggling pilgrims, amped-up monks, and dancing goats! Who would have thought coffee history would be so interesting?

‘The Story of Coffee’ went on to win Gold and Silver honours at the 2020 Telly Awards, which is either a testament to our inspired work or proof that everyone loves coffee (or both).

“According to legend, the story of coffee begins with a 9th-century Ethiopian goatherd named Kaldi, whose flock became exuberant after eating berries from a certain shrub. He tried the fruit himself and was soon dancing with his goats.

When local monks witnessed this, they were intrigued, and started boiling the beans and drinking the liquid to energise their devotions.

The first evidence of coffee culture (minus the baristas) was in 15th-century Yemen, where growers tried to establish a monopoly. It didn’t work. Pilgrims smuggled plants back to their homelands and before long coffee spread to India, Italy and the rest of the world.

Today coffee is one of the most-consumed beverages on the planet, second only to water. And, more than a thousand years later, we continue the dance.”
