The question British children used to ask American GI's on their arrival in the UK in World War II, "Have you got any gum chum?". The answer is in the talk! After two years of blackout, rationing and deprivation the arrival of American forces in Britain in 1942 had a huge impact on the cultural and social life of the country. Musical and culinary tastes changed, segregation of black and white was questioned and attitudes to many things altered - on both sides. This was a fascinating and life-changing time for all concerned. It impact on British life continues to this day and the friendships built up during those dark days are inherited by thousands of families to this day.
