George Szell was an American conductor of Hungarian descent who served as music director of the Cleveland Orchestra, where he brought the orchestra to world-class status. His rigorous rehearsal methods and brilliant musical interpretations are still much loved today. Born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1897, George Szell showed musical talent from an early age and received musical training in several European countries. He began his career as a conductor at the age of 18, when he became music director of the Royal Opera in Berlin. In 1946, he became music director of the Cleveland Orchestra, where he brought the orchestra to world-class status, boasting a sophisticated and balanced sound under his direction. Cell also recorded many works with the Cleveland Orchestra, and these recordings are still enjoyed by classical music fans today. His work has had a profound impact not only on the Cleveland Orchestra, but on the classical music world as a whole.
