The 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross will be slotted between the subcompact Toyota C-HR and the popular Toyota RAV4. The latest extension of the Corolla family will be available with a single engine option and the availability of front- or all-wheel drive. Like most Toyota models, it will come standard with a long list of safety and driver assistance technologies. It debuted in international markets last year and arrives in the U.S. later this year.

All Corolla Cross models are fitted with a black grille and LED lighting on all four corners. Top trims get LED daytime running lights slashing across the top of the headlight cluster. The base trim rides on 17-inch steel wheels, while higher trims get 17- and 18-inch alloy wheels.

If you like the simple, modern interior of the 2021 Toyota Corolla, you'll like the interior of the all-new Corolla Cross. That's because the Corolla Cross cabin is not really all-new. Instead, much of the design is lifted straight out of the Corolla sedan, and that's not a bad thing.

There's seating for five with fabric seats on the L and LE trims. Upgrade to the top-trim XLE, and you'll get Toyota Softex synthetic leather upholstery. There's no genuine leather seating offered, though higher trims get leather-trimmed steering wheels and shifters.

Depending on the model you get, you'll either have a 4.2-inch customizable display inside the analog instrument panel or a 7-inch display tucked between the gauges. A moonroof is available.

At launch, all 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross models will be powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 169 horsepower. It's matched with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) with a physical first gear for better performance off the line than many CVTs.

Unlike some subcompact SUV class rivals, the Corolla Cross is available with either front- or all-wheel drive. With the available all-wheel drive, 50% of the engine's torque can be sent to the back wheels to maximize traction. When the grip isn't needed, the rear wheels are completely disengaged to maximize gas mileage.

Properly equipped, the Corolla Cross can tow up to 1,500 pounds.

Surprisingly, Toyota did not announce a hybrid model of the Corolla Cross, as they have promised for most of their lineup.

Toyota equips the 2022 Corolla Cross with a similar feature list to the Toyota Corolla sedan and hatchback. Every Corolla Cross comes standard with power windows, power door locks, and heated side mirrors. All but the base trim include push-button start, remote keyless entry, and a wireless device charging pad.

The top-trim Corolla Cross XLE will come with dual-zone automatic climate control, while lower grades include single-zone automatic climate control or a manual system. The XLE is also outfitted with a 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat, heated front seats, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

You'll find controls for the audio system, the customizable instrument panel, and advanced driver assistance features on the steering wheel.

All 2022 Corolla Cross models come standard with a Toyota Safety Sense package of advanced driver assistance and safety technologies. It includes lane-centering assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and automatic high-beam headlights.

All but the base model include rear cross traffic alert and blind spot monitoring. The top-trim XLE adds rear parking assist with automatic braking to its features list.

The 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross will initially be available in L, LE, and XLE trim levels. Toyota has not yet released pricing information for the new crossover.

Most class rivals have starting prices around $20,000 and top out below $30,000.
