Why should you use sunscreen?
This is necessary because the sun can be harmful, especially it’s ultraviolet rays. Ultraviolet rays consists out of wave of different wavelengths. Two important types are UVA and UVB rays.

- UVB only reaches the superficial levels of our skin. Too much exposure to UVB can cause a sunburn. The intensity of UVB rays increases during summertime, explaining why we commonly experience sunburns in the summer.

- UVA rays goes much deeper into our skin. Therefore they can cause damage to the DNA of our skin cells, leading to uncontrolled growth of some of these cells and ultimately to skin cancer. UVA rays also leads to an accelerated ageing of the skin. It lowering the elasticity of the skin and makes it saggy. The intensity of UVA rays remain constant throughout the year.

Physical vs. Chemical blockers.
Chemical blockers absorb the suns rays. The upsides: they are easy to apply, transparent and cheap. The downsides: they can cause irritations of the skin and it takes 15 minutes before they become active.
Physical blockers reflect UVB as a physical barrier. This is done with zinc or titanium. The upside: they cause less irritation of the skin, they work immediately and they have a higher UVA protection.
The downsides: they can leave highly visible marks and they are more expensive.

Does SPF matter?
SPF stand for sun protection factor. Which is a measure of the protection against UVB-rays the sunscreen gives you. It practically tells you how well you are protected against a sunburn. SPF does not measure UVA protection.

Best practises:
- Use a sunscreen with a SPF-grade of at least 30 and protection against UVA.
- Use 5 grams of sunscreen and apply it on all the parts exposed to the sun.
- Apply it 15-20 minutes before you go outside and re-apply it every 2-3 hours, re-apply it after swimming or after sweating a lot.
- You can also wear protective clothing with an ultraviolet protection factor: UPF.
- It is important to stay a much as possible in shaded area’s
- Avoid the sun at peak hours: 10am to 4pm.
- Children younger than 6 months should have almost no exposed to bright sunlight.
