How to NOT get Called for Holding

How many times have you seen a big play called back by a holding call? Holding calls are drive and momentum killers. The offense is forced to play behind the sticks and the playbook becomes limited with the need for big plays.

Offensive holding is generally defined as preventing a defender from moving by grabbing or pulling him as he separates. When an official sees cloth being grabbed by an extended arm outside of the defender's frame, they immediately throw the flag. To prevent a holding call a blocker must have an inside grasp of the defender within his frame and the defender must still be inside the blockers frame too.

To prevent holding calls a blocker must achieve 3 elements of a block:

1) Target - If a blocker is locked on their proper target he can react quickly to the defender's movement and maintain proper body position. Without the proper eye discipline the blocker's reaction is delayed and holding often occurs.

2) Inside Hand Placement - The blocker must strike and achieve hand placement inside the frame of the defender. I like to compare the defender's shoulder pad chest plate to a steering wheel. If the blocker can control the defender's chest, he can control the defender's movement.

3) Run Your Feet - When the defender tries to separate and disengage the blocker must run his feet to stay between the defender and the ball carrier. If you cannot keep up with the defender's movement you must let go to prevent holding.

Holding calls are the result of poor technique and not moving your feet. If a blocker can keep a proper target, achieve inside hand placement, and move his feet then he will drastically prevent getting called for holding.
