Our most recent episode of the Lifespan podcast is on the science of looking younger, longer (Episode 6). In this episode, one of the topics Matt and I cover is our skin and the importance of collagen in maintaining skin health.

Collagen is a protein that is a key component in the makeup of our bones, connective tissue, and skin. It is the most abundant protein in the body. Three fourths of our skin is collagen and a third of all the protein in our bodies is collagen. As we age however, collagen breaks down and becomes harder for the body to make.

One potential way to increase collagen as we age is to ingest it. Breakdown products of collagen called peptides make it into the bloodstream and seem to activate the growth signaling protein called mTOR and induce collagen synthesis. Recent studies show that both Vitamin C (a cofactor for the two enzymes required for collagen synthesis) and physical exercise within 60 minutes of consuming collagen support its uptake into the system.
