Wyoming begins with the basin: 200 miles of flat dirt road without a tree in sight. Days start early and end late to compensate for the slow death march under the sun midday in over 90 degree heat. Covering 30-40 miles each day, I quickly approach the Wind River Range, which brings shade from clouds, lakes, and mountains. Hiking through the Cirque of the Towers is certainly a highlight of the trail. Beautifully sharp and unique peaks tower over lakes. Running from storms, I continue up through Titcomb Basin on the Knapsack Col alternate. A peaceful remoteness is felt in the silence of the passes and valleys.

I’ve been told the land between the Wind River Range and Yellowstone National Park, where the CDT meanders northwest through the hills, is where Yellowstone relocates their “problem bears.” Rumors travel down the trail to be careful in an area where a grizzly recently killed a baby cow. Also, it was reported that a hiker was charged by a bear resulting in the hiker using their bear spray. I cautiously hike on while passing the occasional bear scat and prints. Thus begins me banging my trekking poles together or yelling out “Hey Bear!!” around blind corners for its grizzly country from here to Canada.

I welcome the feeling of warm clouds of steam and the smell of sulfur that float through the air. The sounds of bubbling pools and erupting geysers merge creating a melody as I walk past. About 100 miles of the CDT runs through Yellowstone National Park, and I’m grateful to revisit this special place. However, without much delay, I continue onwards for Wyoming ends with Yellowstone and Montana awaits.
