The first event of the Zócalo series, "How Should Societies Remember Their Sins?," was held on July 12, 2022. The event explored the question, “What Is Our Responsibility for Our Government’s Wars?” The panelists were Lieutenant General (ret.) Robert E. Schmidle, Jr., Air Force veteran Noël Lipana, and the New York Times' United Nations bureau chief Farnaz Fassihi. Moderated by University of North Carolina historian William Sturkey.
Farnaz Fassihi explains how "America has the gift of geography" when it comes to feeling the effects of war: Even though the U.S. wages so many wars, the general population doesn't feel like they're at war.
“How Should Societies Remember Their Sins?” is a two-year editorial and event series supported by the Mellon Foundation. Blending scholarly essays and personal stories, we will explore how societies around the world collectively remember their transgressions and make attempts at repair, and how we might imagine new paths forward.
