It's hard to believe the Polestar 1 was ever given the green light for production. Just like the best-selling Polestar 2, the Polestar was originally a Volvo concept car.

But when Volvo and its parent firm Geely wanted to create a standalone performance division using the Polestar name, putting the Volvo Concept Coupe into production as Polestar's first ever car was seen to be the perfect way to get people to notice the new brand.

Unlike all the Polestar models to follow it, the 1 is a plug-in hybrid. It uses the same hybrid system as you'll find in a Volvo – in fact, as it was a Volvo concept car, it uses the Volvo S90 'SPA' platform, its interior and a lot of S90/V90 design cues.

It was only ever available in left-hand drive and came with a £140,000 price tag – unsurprisingly only a handful were sold here in the UK.
