A note from John:
TLDR: This was the first song that Anthony Shea ever played for me, and it’s one of the main reasons we still work together.

True story, I’ve been friends with Anthony Shea for nearly 8 years. In that time, we’ve collaborated and/or worked on each other’s projects dozens of times. Whenever I’m in need of specific music, I always go to him first.
But music and filmmaking were not how we met. We were both bartenders at the Dolby and Palladium in Hollywood. He was barely 23, and I was a former barista, so as ‘noobs’ we ended up working together a lot.
Like most young musicians in LA, he would often suggest “Dude, you should check out my latest track!”, and like most people who have spent more than six months in LA, I would say “Hell no!”. I mean, you don’t want to lose respect for someone you have to work with 3-4 days a week. There was already enough of that going on at those venues.
Despite this disconnect, we got along very well. We loved to talk movies, TV shows, and even screenwriting and camera gear. For a 23-year-old wannabe rockstar, he knew a hell of a lot about cinematography, and the history of film, in general.
So I figured ‘what the hell!’ This wouldn’t be the first time I made good friends with a terrible artist.
JOHN
“OK, Mr. Shea. Let’s hear your latest hit single.”
ANTHONY
“Oh, dude, I just finished mixing this one last night! And the lyrics are about--”
JOHN
“That’s plenty! Thank you, give me your headphones...huh...Oh...Holy shit, Anthony! You actually make music…”
ANTHONY
“Yeah, I know.”
JOHN
“No, no, no. Like this is a real song!”
ANTHONY
“Yeah, I--”
JOHN
“Like this could be playing at a mall I don’t go to or on a radio station I don’t listen to. This is really good, man!”
What struck me was that, even though it was not my kind of music, I knew it was really well made. Ever since then we’ve been good friends and collaborators, even after I moved to Texas to work on the Modern Rogue.
Oh, and that first song he played for me was Coming Home Tonight. I’m so chuffed that I finally had an excuse to use it in a video.
