We Like L.A. helps you find the best things to do in Los Angeles!

This video is about the massive wistaria (or more commonly, wisteria) vine located in Sierra Madre California. Originally planted from a one-gallon pot in 1894, the vine now takes up more than one acre of land and weighs approximately 250 tons.

In 1990 it was certified as the largest blossoming plant in the world, and is considered one of the seven horticultural wonders of the world. At its peak it's said to have 1.5 million blossoms.

The vine is on private property (spread over two residences), but because it is a National Historical Monument the homeowners are required to offer one day per year of free public admission. The showings coincides with the Sierra Madre Wistaria Festival, which takes place on Sierra Madre Blvd about one mile south of where the vine is. In 2017 the festival (and free showing of the plant) took place on March 12. Keep an eye out on the Sierra Madre Chamber website for info about next year's showing.

Finally... why is it spelled wistaria instead of wisteria? According to this KPCC story: "...the town of Sierra Madre prefers to spell it "wistaria," a name referring to the American physician Dr. Caspar Wistar. The spelling is a matter of some debate among plant enthusiasts." http://www.scpr.org/news/2014/03/14/4...
