A swarm of tornados tore through central areas of the United States last week, with severe thunderstorms spawning at least 129 between April 25 and 28, most of them in Oklahoma, Nebraska and Iowa.

Two of the tornados were immensely powerful, reaching a mile across with wind speeds up to about 170mph on the ground and causing widespread destruction as buildings were torn apart.

At least five people were killed, although warnings of tornados were given days in advance and helped to reduce the number of casualties. The intense thunderstorms that spawned the tornados also brought torrential rains, flash flooding and hail across much of the central US.
