Maurice Ravel was born in 1875 in the rural French town of Sibourg, but lived in Paris from an early age. Raised by Spanish and French parents, he struggled in his early studies at the Paris Conservatoire, but showed a talent for composition and was readmitted to study under Gabriel Fauré. His early work, Pavane for a Dead Princess, attracted attention, and the unfairness of the Roman challenge was a major factor in his decision to leave the conservatory. He was recognized for his innovative music with the release of the Water Play and the String Quartet in F major, but the controversy over his failure to win the Rome Prize had a major impact on the French music scene. Ravel was offered the Legion of Honor by the French government, but he declined.
In his creative heyday, Ravel released Daphnis and Chloé, the Spanish Fanfare, and Gaspard at Night, but after his participation in World War I, he struggled with his creative work, which he overcame with Tomb of the Unknowns. In 1932, he suffered a head injury in a car accident and his health deteriorated. From this point on, he was unable to compose, and in 1933, he suffered from a nervous system disease, and in 1937, he underwent brain surgery, but died at the age of 62 that year.
