The 2022 Ford Maverick is an all-new compact pickup truck. It has a number of traits that make it uniquely compelling.

Number one, a hybrid powertrain comes standard. It’s a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine, an electric motor, a continuously variable transmission, and front-wheel drive, united together to return 191 horsepower (191hp, 155 lb-ft) and a Ford-stated 40 mpg in the city.

Number two, Ford wisely also offers a 2.0L EcoBoost, non-hybrid engine matched to an 8-speed automatic. It makes 250 horsepower (250hp, 277 lb-ft), is offered in front or all-wheel drive, and can tow up to 4,000 pounds when equipped with the 4K Tow Package. That’s up from the Hybrid’s 2,000-pound towing max.

And three, unlike the rest of Ford’s truck lineup, the Maverick features a unibody structure, as visually suggested by the lack of a gap between the cab and the bed. Speaking of the bed, by adding wood 2x4s or 2x6s buyers can create segmented storage or elevate the floor to different heights and even create bike and kayak racks.

There’s a 12-volt electrical outlet for power, whatever you’d like to plug-in from power tools to hair dryers. If you can think it up, it’s likely you can create the perfect configuration back here for whatever you do.

Inside, the cab roomy, functional, and stylish, accented with pops of color and cool granite-like trim. Also noteworthy inside is a standard 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity and an under-seat storage area that can store an inflated volleyball.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the Maverick is its price. Not including destination charges, a base Maverick XL trim starts at $19,995. Included among the Maverick’s standard equipment roster are LED headlights, 5 drive modes, and automatic emergency braking.

If you’ve got the budget, you can outfit your Maverick with full-speed adaptive cruise control, evasive steering assist, and an FX4 off-road package featuring all-terrain tires, underbody protection, and a retuned suspension.

The 2022 Ford Maverick goes on sale in the fall of 2021, but it is available to reserve right now for buyers seeking first access to the rejuvenated compact pickup truck segment.
