The 2021 MotorTrend Truck of the Year is…probably not the one you think.
For us, the story of 2021 was the arrival of the highly anticipated Ford Maverick. It seems that Ford’s smallest entry into the truck market went from rumors and speculation to hitting the streets of our cities in no time at all.
But despite the Maverick’s low price tag and stellar reception by buyers, the Maverick got snubbed for Truck of the Year.
That honor went to none other than the Rivian R1T. It was a huge upset, so we thought it would be important to unpack exactly why MotorTrend is so crazy about the Rivian…a truck which at least one Ford executive has called a “great threat” to its truck business.

The competition for Truck of the Year is always stiff. You’ve got the perennial favorites like the Ford F150 and Chevy Silverado, but lately you’ve got some newcomers too like the Ford Maverick, Hyundai Santa Cruz, and GMC Hummer EV.
And then you’ve got the Rivian, which MotorTrend labeled "the most astonishing pickup truck we've ever driven"
According to MotorTrend, the Rivian R1T is much more than just a "credible pickup truck which is also an electric vehicle." Rivian used the chance to re-examine what a modern pickup truck might be, rather than simply mounting an electric motor or two under the hood or box." According to Motor Trend, "no matter how you compare it, the R T's value stands out."
Beyond being trendy and electric, MotorTrend seems to think the Rivian is legitimately a solid workhorse.
Rivian's EV truck hauls more, tows more, and has a more excellent cabin than the GMC Hummer EV pickup. It drives and handles better than the Hummer EV pickup; it's also less expensive and has superior fuel economy.
