On November 13, 2021, The Good Guys car show was in full swing at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton, CA. Something else was also happening. In one of the buildings in the middle of the car show, the Alameda County Central Railroad Society has two model railroad layouts. One is HO Scale, and the other is O Scale.

We were invited by the ACCRS to come hear about how they use public events such as the car show, and of course, the ever-popular county fair, as a way to engage the public. One of the recurring themes you'll hear about if you're around enough modelers is concern about model railroading dying as a hobby.

Thousands of visitors wander through the ACCRS layouts every year, giving the members of this group a unique opportunity to be ambassadors for the hobby. By engaging the public in a positive manner, not only do clubs like this help the hobby survive, but their ongoing efforts should also be applauded by all!

It isn't always easy, but the ACCRS recognizes the opportunity the situation presents, and makes sure to take advantage of the exposure that the situation provides!
