The Fishing Daily Podcast Series 04 Episode 03 of the Fishing Daily Podcast, host Oliver McBride speaks with CG Gaffney, former owner of the Mary Kate WD-30, about his ongoing quest for justice and improved safety regulations in the fishing industry.

Gaffney, who has spent a decade and a half seeking accountability for losses incurred after purchasing the Mary Kate from Germany, has been vocal about the need for better safety measures, especially for boats under 24 metres.

Recently, Gaffney and others provided evidence at the Committee for Petitions, prompting discussions about the future direction of safety regulations in the industry. The committee's decision to bypass Minister for Transport and the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, and escalate the matter to higher authority of the Taoiseach and Tánaiste, indicates a growing recognition of the urgency and seriousness of the issues raised.

One particularly alarming revelation came from a stability and shipbuilding expert from the Netherlands, who highlighted significant deficiencies in the construction and certification process of vessels like the Mary Kate. Gaffney emphasises the need for a thorough investigation into these lapses to prevent future tragedies.

Moving forward, Gaffney urges policymakers, including Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, to prioritise safety regulations and address the gaps in existing laws, especially concerning stability requirements for vessels under 24 metres.

Throughout his journey, Gaffney acknowledges the invaluable support of individuals who have tirelessly advocated for justice and safety in the fishing industry.

As the fight for improved safety measures continues, Gaffney remains committed to ensuring that no one else experiences the same dangers and losses faced by those in the fishing community. With the support of dedicated advocates and policymakers, he hopes to see meaningful change that protects lives and prevents future tragedies at sea.
