Does my furnace need a fresh air intake?
If you have a furnace or hot water heater in an enclosed space it is important to protect yourself from carbon monoxide by making sure your appliances have adequate fresh air in order for the burners to light properly. Your furnace combustion air intake should be at least 12 inches from the floor and 12 inches from the ceiling, but check your local codes. There is a furnace carbon monoxide danger if your furnace does not have enough fresh air intake to properly light the burners. A sign that your furnace is not burning properly is that there is a soot build up in and around your furnace.
