Here is a two-minute look at the process of carving a dugout canoe. I'd previously carved a dugout canoe from a Douglas fir log with Churchill Clark, then led a five-man, five-month expedition down the 2,341-mile Missouri River from Three Forks, Montana to St. Louis, Missouri. I had no intention of ever carving another canoe, but I arrived home from the Missouri trip to find the perfect canoe tree had fallen, and it was begging to be made into a canoe. It took three and a half months of work over our seven-month winter to carve the massive log into a finished canoe, but what a beauty she is!
