Shot by combat photographer Jim Bates on March 18, 1945, this film footage shows Major General Maurice Rose giving out medals to his men of the 3rd Armored Division for their heroic efforts during the Battle of Cologne. General Rose was tragically killed in action just two weeks later on March 30, 1945 near Paderborn, Germany. He was the highest ranking Jewish American officer in the Army as well as the highest ranking officer to be killed in action in the European theater during World War II. General Rose was the son and grandson of rabbis and grew up in Denver, Colorado.
