American musical theatre giant Stephen Sondheim has died aged 91.

The composer and lyricist was behind Broadway smash hits like West Side Story, A Little Night Music and Company.

His eight lifetime Tony Awards surpassed the total of any other composer.

Mr Sondheim was one of the most prolific writers as in addition to his eight Tony Awards, he won eight Grammys, an Academy Award, and a Pulitzer Prize for drama.

Mr Sondheim was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015.
