On Saturday, September 30, 2023, the world-famous chimpanzee Tushi gave birth to a young one. The agile 31-year-old great ape achieved world fame at Royal Burgers' Zoo when she knocked a filming drone out of the air with a stick on April 10, 2015.

On Sunday, October 29, 2023, female chimpanzee Laura gave birth to a young one in Burgers' Zoo. Laura came to Arnhem from the Danish zoo of Aalborg on December 7, 2022. Very quickly after her step-by-step introduction, she turned out to be pregnant. Laura is a chimpanzee of the West African subspecies that is critically endangered in the wild.

Hair loss (alopecia) is a complex phenomenon that is not fully understood either in human or nonhuman primates. Hair loss can occur as the result of a congenital or genetic disorder, or it can develop during the lifetime of the animal. Hair loss occurring throughout life can be further divided into inflammatory and noninflammatory types. In this article, we focus on alopecia in nonhuman primates. We also will refer to humans and other mammals, given that mechanisms of hair loss and potential treatments for this disorder have been studied infrequently in nonhuman primates.
