1. Make your own decisions
He was raised by his mother in the Greenwich Village and Little Italy areas of Manhattan.

2. Have a devil-may-care attitude
His father lived within walking distance and De Niro spent much time with him as he grew up.

3. Follow your passion
He made his stage debut at age 10, when he played the Cowardly Lion in a school production of The Wizard of Oz.

4. Take advantage of opportunities
He dropped out of high school at age 16 to pursue acting.

5. Ignore the critics
He studied acting at the Stella Adler Conservatory, as well as Lee Strasberg's Actors Studio.

6. Follow your instincts
His first film role came at the age of 20, when he appeared in The Wedding Party.

7. Do it now
He gained popular attention with his role as a dying Major League Baseball player in Bang the Drum Slowly.

8. Always try your best
He was cast as the young Vito Corleone in the film The Godfather Part II , for which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

9. Take chances
He earned Academy Award nominations for the psychological thrillers Taxi Driver and Cape Fear, both directed by Scorsese.

10. Have fun
He employs whatever extreme tactic he feels is necessary to elicit the best performance from those with whom he is working.
