The Ender 5 really made a great impression on me when I reviewed it, but unfortunately it still had an old version of Marlin without thermal runaway protection, EEPROM support for saving settings, or any of the other great modern Marlin features. It uses the same Melzi board without a bootloader which makes your initial update trickier.

This video attempts to fix this problem. It features a step by step guide for burning a bootloader, and then pre-made configuration files to go with the latest Marlin 1.1.9. After this update you will have a safer, easier to use 3D printer. If you’re new to all of this, take your time, go step by step and hit up google for any issues. This is exactly what I did when receiving an error trying to upload the firmware. Google told me to try another set of USB ports on my PC, which fixed the problem.

This video is correct for the Ender 3 as well, the only difference being instead of using my zip file, you would copy and overwrite the files from Example Configurations - Creality - Ender 3.
