Here's a list of some of the most common causes of water hammer and noises similar to water hammer.

1. Fast acting valves such as solenoid valves. Seen in dishwashers, washing machines, and fridges.
2. Excessive water pressure. Over 80 PSI
3. Backflow preventer or check valve installed on the water distribution line, causing an open water system to become closed. A expansion tank should be installed with the installation of a backflow preventer.
4. Shutoff valve not open fully. Common on toilets and sinks.
5. Faulty toilet fill valve
6. Faulty cartridge. Common on shower valves.
7. Water heaters with internal check valves
8. Potable water expansion tank bladder has ruptured or is waterlogged. If applicable.
