Are Dogs OMNIVORES or CARNIVORES? All the FACTS

Dogs don't secrete an enzyme called amylase which helps break down carbohydrates in the mouth. Since dogs lack this enzyme, they cannot start breaking down carbohydrates in the mouth.

Dogs can make their own blood sugar from a process called gluconeogenesis. This process allows dogs to generate energy from protein and fat, and therefore, they don't need carbohydrates for energy.

Dogs have sharp canine teeth and jagged teeth designed for ripping meat and crushing bones. This indicates that their mouth is designed to eat meat rather than to chew food.

Carnivores tend to have eyes that point forward. This gives them better depth perception to catch prey. While some omnivores like gorillas and hippos also have eyes that point forward, their digestive system is different from dogs.

The speaker acknowledges that dogs can digest some carbohydrates with the help of enzymes produced in their liver, pancreas, and kidneys. However, this doesn't mean they should be fed a lot of carbohydrates.

A dog's diet should primarily consist of meat, mimicking what they would eat in the wild. Ideally, 70-80% of their diet should be lean meat, 10% should be bones, and 5% should be liver. A small amount of fruits and vegetables can be added to their diet, but refined carbohydrates should be avoided.
