The story of Napoleon Bonaparte. Betrothed to Désirée Clary, Napoleon hurries to Paris, refusing to be posted to western France's bloody civil war in the Vendée. Depressed over his flagging career, Napoleon is forced to wait out that summer in the capital. Unexpectedly, in 'the whiff of grapeshot', political turmoil propels Napoleon to centerstage in suppressing a royalist uprising against France's new government, the democratically-elected Directory. The year covered is 1795.
