The first time I was asked to convert a garage to living space I thought, “well, I am a real contractor now”. Everyone wants to capture that space. Heck, its already inside, why not. In general, I am not a fan. First and foremost, the garage is rarely built to the same standards as the rest of the structure and to bring things up to snuff it might be easier to add-on. Second, I can’t stand the aesthetic. I just can’t. I always think it looks dumb. When I was asked to convert one, I put my foot down and we made it not obvious that we had converted garage to living space. The same is true for this little gem. Carport to living space nearly ten years ago. We changed the elevation of the yard to make sense with what was there, re-routed the driveway, and utilized some considered landscaping to hide that things were ever any different. I think it was a success. How do you handle the garage to living space conversion? Does it make you feel icky? I know it works for some folks and some budgets; I just wish they could all be this way.
