Genuinely understated and tasteful Mercedes-Benz cars are a little hard to find these days, with the brand generally choosing to pursue bigger, louder, meaner vehicles that sell well. The AMG CLS 53 is not one of those. Instead, this 2022 CLS feels cut from Benz’s old block: it’s quietly-styled yet fabulously sorted to drive.

In today’s episode of Chasing Cars, Tom reviews the 2022 Mercedes-AMG CLS 53, which is now the only CLS model sold in Australia. It has a 3.0-litre turbo inline six-cylinder petrol engine making 320kW of power (429 hp), plus a 48v mild-hybrid system and AWD.

The CLS is based on the same architecture as the related E-Class sedan, but the coupe-roofline CLS competes with the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe and Audi A7.
