Friday the 13th was far from being the first slasher movie ever made, but it probably defines the genre more than any other film. The story and set-up are simple — a masked man stalks teenagers and young adults who only want to party and have sex (except for that first film where the killer is actually Jason’s mother).

The 1980 film took direct inspiration from Halloween two years earlier, but it traded that film’s slow-burn suspense for more kills, more gore, and more sex, and there have been plenty of sequels over the years, with some getting quite weird.
