"ART/new york No. 49
Mary Frank is an artist best known for her ceramic sculpture and her work in printmaking. However, in the past 10 years of so, she has turned to painting and has created an impressive body of work which is rich and evocative. Her dreamlike landscapes on multi shaped panels and triptychs are often filled with love, soulful figures and repetitive mythological symbols such as her ever present owl. Frank's painterliness suggests sweeping emotion with a personal resonance, an ease with her highly intuitive process, and a passion for the art of painting.
This program includes Frank's 1998 exhibition titled "Inscapes" at the DC Moore Gallery in New York as well as interviews with gallery director Edward De Luca, renowned art historian Linda Nochlin and Mary Frank in her studio and sculpture garden in upstate New York.
Paul Tschinkel is the producer and director of the ART/new york series. A painter and a video artist, he is a graduate of the MFA program at Yale University. His work has been shown widely in Europe, Japan and in the US at such a prominent institutions as The Whitney Museum of American Art, MoMA and The National Gallery.
Over the years, Tschinkel's unique work has become a valuable historical resource on contemporary art and artists. Begun in 1979, ART/new york has covered such notable artists as Alice Neel, Chuck Close, Louise Bourgeois, Jeff Koons, Larry Rivers, Nan Goldin, Kiki Smith and many more. "
