Occupying hundreds of acres of some of the most valuable land in the country and causing regular and persistent traffic congestion, will the three markets stay where they are as Britain's most important centres for the distribution of fruit, vegetable and flowers, fish and meat? Or will they be closed and the distribution centres move outside London? This film looks at the problem of London's main markets, visits them at their busiest time, in the early morning, and highlights their problems. This is a film full of the colour and bustle that is so characteristic of the three old markets, and it is a film that brings into focus the market men, their work, and the markets traditions which have often been handed down through five or six generations.

This film was first broadcast: 1960
