Retired basketball player Rex Chapman discussed his struggle with gambling addiction. He revealed after acquiring a $10 million extension contract with the Hornets in 1991, his habit escalated. This led to him recklessly spending his wealth not only on the likes of cars and vacations but mainly on an exponential increase in his gambling, going from betting $500 to $1,500 per race. This need for an escape stemmed from unresolved childhood issues: growing up in a family where betting was normalized, residing in the fast-paced, high-risk world of professional sports, and not feeling he truly earned his salary because of his talent. With the advent of off-track betting, Chapman's addiction heightened due to the capacity to bet on 90 races per day, in contrast to traditional 9-10 races at tracks. He estimated his total losses from gambling over his lifetime to be approximately $12 million.
