This is the new Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport, and it's arguably the car the Mk8 GTI should have been from the start. Its EA888 engine now produces 296bhp and 400Nm of torque, making it good for 0-62mph in just 5.6 seconds – faster than a Honda Civic Type R.

It might look similar to the base car, but Clubsport models get revised suspension and dampers, sit 10mm lower, the electronic differential has been recalibrated, more negative camber has been added to the front wheels, 357mm brakes have are fitted and the DGS gearbox now has shorter ratios.

The cabin is exactly what you expect from a Mk8 Golf GTI with great sports seats, but also that frustrating 10-inch infotainment system. Thankfully it comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

A new GTI Clubsport costs around £3k more than a regular GTI, but it's well worth it.
