Imam Hussain is considered the master of the free people of the world because he stood up against the tyrant ruler of the time (Yazid Ibn Muawiyah) and did not recognize him.
This standing caused him and his family, relatives and friends to be surrounded and martyred in Karbala desert in 61 AH.
