Here are 4 Tips to prevent your cat from getting hairballs:
Number 1: Is the easiest one and that is grooming your cat. Brush them daily to cut down on loose hair so they don’t have to swallow it all in their grooming process. You can also consider having your long hair or even short hair cat shaved by a pet groomer to cut down on the amount of hair they ingest. A shaved cat coat isn’t for everyone but some do look super cute with a lion cut.

Number 2: Using a veterinary formulated Oral hairball remedy gels or intestinal lubricants or laxatives for cats. There is a product called Laxatone which is the main ingredient in all of these over the counter veterinary formulated lubricants that coats hairballs and allows them to pass more easily through the digestive system for elimination in your cats stool. These products are also rich in fish oils and fatty acids. There are many other over the counter hairballs oral gel brands. A lot of cat owners simply put a dab of it on their cats nose and they lick it off. Always speak to your veterinarian before starting these supplements.

Some other things that work as mild laxatives in cats are feeding them the oil from a fish oil capsule, or some oily canned sardines and the juice which my cats love to lick up!

Number 3: Feed a hairball control diet which will be formulated with higher fiber and more omegas to help hairballs pass through the GI system and digest easier. You can also feed a sensitive stomach or Gastro-intestinal diet, which will have more fiber in it. Be aware that some Hairball control diets with too much oils may cause your cat to get diarrhea and you will need to find a different diet. You can also try adding some wet food to one of their daily meals to keep them hydrated or a cat water fountain to promote more water intake, which helps with overall health and digestion in cats.

Number 4: Avoid Dry cat foods sold over the counter that are created with the focus on palatability which may have more sugars and salts that can be dehydrating for our cats which therefore lead to a dry esophagus and hairball formation. Most of these dry diets are sold at your local supermarkets and are ones to avoid if your pet is frequently vomiting up hairballs.

I suggest taking a drive to your local pet store and looking for a veterinary formulated hairball diet instead.

Okay, so if you have tried all of these tricks and your cat is still vomiting up hairballs or vomiting in general it is definitely time to bring your cat to the veterinarian to investigate why they are vomiting, which can be due to a serious intestinal blockage, kidney disease, Inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal lymphoma and more!
