Colorado's highest peak stands above Leadville at 14,438.' It's broad east ridge provides a gradual approach to it's summit and a relatively straightforward ski descent for mid-winter. My partner and I wanted to test out some overnight gear, so we packed down some snow and set up camp around treeline. It was a perfectly calm and clear night out. The climb was sunny and mild for the season, and we made our way up the ridge without too much trouble. We ripped skins on the summit and enjoyed some great turns on the way down, in between some thin and rocky sections that took a beating on our skis. Snow conditions improved as we got lower on the mountain, and once back in the trees, we cruised back to the trailhead and celebrated a successful winter trip on Mount Elbert.
