This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the Hyundai Kona and Kia Seltos subcompact SUVs. The Seltos and Kona have the same engines, a base 2L 4-cylinder matched with a CVT, 146 horsepower for the Seltos and 147 horsepower for the Kona. Both have 132 lb-ft of torque. The Kona outgoing model used to have a 6-speed automatic transmission, the CVT is new for 2022. The second engine they share is a turbocharged 4-cylinder with a 7-speed dual clutch transmission. The Seltos has 175 horsepower and the Kona for 2022 has upped the power to 195 horsepower. They both have 195 lb-ft of torque. The 1.6T is only available on the top models of the Seltos and Kona. The Kia Seltos has sharp handling like the Kona but it is bigger and has a taller ride height. It offers a smooth and comfortable ride with the option of FWD or AWD on the base LX trim in Canada. AWD is standard on all trims above the LX model. In the US, it’s a different story, the base model comes standard with AWD but one trim up has standard FWD with the option of AWD for $1500 US. All other trims come standard with AWD. Blind spot collision warning and rear cross traffic alert are standard on the base trim. The Kona AWD gets Independent rear suspension and FWD solid rear axle suspension. In the US, you can add AWD to the 2L engine for $1,500 and in Canada $2,000.. The N Line comes standard with AWD. Additional insulation, new windshield glass has improved the noise, vibration and harshness of the Kona. This crossover is nimble and quick, the extra 20 horsepower for the 1.6T for 2022 makes a big difference, it’s a great city SUV. The 7-speed dual clutch transmission on both adds sportiness to the drive. The Kona offers blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert one up from the base model. The Seltos has a comfortable interior, you sit up and over the dash offering great visibility. It comes standard with heated cloth front seats, an 8” touchscreen, a 3.5” instrument cluster and Apple Carplay and Android Auto. The top two trims get the bigger 10.25” touchscreen and 7” instrument cluster. One up from the base model comes standard with a heated steering wheel, leatherette seats and a leather shifter. The top two trims have heated rear seats, ventilated front seats and a wireless charger. On the top trim is where you’ll find a head-up display and the Bose Premium Sound system. I would just like to point out that in US you get the larger touchscreen one up from the base model. For 2022, the Kona gets a redesigned dashboard and a bigger standard touchscreen going from 7 to 8 inches and wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto. Some other new changes include, a 10.25 “ digital driver display, a 10.25” touchscreen, a wireless charger and about an inch more second row legroom. The larger screens are standard on the top trim if you add a package for $5600 CAD or $2500 USD. Included in that package is a head-up display, leather seating surfaces with red stitching, a wireless charging pad, ventilated front seats and an 8-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. Leather seating surfaces are also available in a package added to the Preferred trim. The Kona does not offer heated rear seats and the heated steering wheel is standard one up from the base model just like the Seltos. The Seltos is quite a bit bigger than the Kona, 8 inches longer. They have about the same front legroom but the Seltos offers almost 3.5 inches of extra space in the second row. In overall cargo capacity, the Seltos is the winner offering 17 cubic feet more space and over 7 cubic feet extra behind the second row.
