At some point in the past, the Turtles and the Foot Clan had made a truce. However, this truce began to wane and break down, and eventually, the Foot declared open season on the Turtles again. On the night they were scheduled to attend a dinner party set up by April and Casey, the Turtles and Splinter were ambushed. Enraged, Raphael stormed out of the apartment and fought through a scrum of Foot Ninja and reached a duel with their leader Karai. Raphael grabbed her and suplexed her off of a dock, putting them both into the water. As Raphael stabbed her in the back with his sai, Karai stabbed him in the throat with a katar. While Karai was rescued by the Foot and lived, albeit remaining in a coma, Raphael was not so fortunate, and drifted to the bottom of the bay.
