Subaru's smallest crossover is also Subie's best seller and the best way to buy the most popular small crossover in America is undoubtedly with the 2.5L boxer under the hood. The base Crosstrek has to make do with 152 HP from it's 2.0L engine while the Sport and Limited trims bump power up to 182 HP for considerably more lively performance. No version of the Crosstrek will break any land speed records, but the 2.5L model puts 0-60 and passing times a hair above average for a sub-compact CUV in America and right on par with a number of larger options like the Escape or Rogue.

As always, the it selling point for the Crosstrek continues to be a low sticker price and high practicality. Starting at $24,995 (+$1,295 destination) all Crosstreks feature smartphone integration, standard AWD, a suite of standard active safety tech, an automatic transmission, and the signature Subaru low roofline. The Crosstrek is after all kind-of-sort-of a lifted wagon like the Outback. The benefit to shoppers is that loading kayaks, bikes, skis, or anything else onto the roof is considerably easier than in a higher crossover like a RAV4 or CR-V.

Want the 2.5L engine? Then the price tag goes up to $28,995 for the Sport trim or $30,895 for the base Limited trim. Want everything? You’re talking about $35,000 tops including destination for the very muddy Limited model seen in this video.

Bottom line, the Crosstrek delivers solid value, decent performance, high fuel economy and tons of standard tech for a price tag well below the likes of the RAV4. If you’re not a fan of CVTs or you need a more capable AWD system, you could look at a Ford Bronco Sport, but be prepared to spend quite a bit more…
