In the Arctic, present-day scientists discover a frozen aircraft. In 1942, Nazi general Johann Schmidt steals the Tesseract in occupied Norway. Steve Rogers, rejected by the U.S. Army, gets a chance when Dr. Erskine recruits him for a super-soldier experiment. Schmidt uses the Tesseract's power to fuel his ambitions. After Erskine's death, Rogers, now Captain America, tours to promote war bonds. In 1943, he learns of his friend Barnes' disappearance, leading a rescue mission. Rogers assembles a team, gains a vibranium shield, and falls in love with Agent Carter. In 1945, they capture Zola, but Barnes seemingly dies. Rogers confronts Schmidt, who vanishes through a portal, and crashes a plane into the Arctic. Presumed dead, Rogers awakens in the present. Nick Fury informs him of 70 years passing. In a post-credits scene, Fury proposes a new mission.
