To think that it's been 35 years since the original Top Gun is insane and what's even more insane is that we're finally getting the long awaited sequel to the movie that birthed Tom Cruise the movie star in Top Gun Maverick. But is Top Gun 2 just another nostalgia cash grab or does it actually have something more to say that speaks to Tom Cruise as an aging star? The answer is unanimously the second. Joseph Kosinski's Top Gun sequel is not only a far, far better film than the original Top Gun, it's arguably one of the best sequels ever made. Top Gun Maverick has so much to say about legacy, letting go, trust, and fighting for that intangible special thing in a world that's constantly trying to move past it, trying to automate it. Top Gun Maverick is a masterpiece because it's just reverent enough of the original Top Gun without being overly meta or celebratory over it. Top Gun 2 has its own story to tell and it tells it with such class all while pushing the limits of blockbuster cinema and pioneering new filmmaking technologies and giving audiences a once in a lifetime theatrical experience.
