An inverting amplifier or inverting op amp is a circuit that has an input applied through a resistor to the inverting terminal of the op amp. It also has feedback from the output back to the inverting terminal. These two resistors create a voltage gain in the circuit that is proportional to the ratio of the feedback resistor to the input resistor. The output is out of phase with the input which makes the circuit an "inverting" one.

This video describes the circuit, derives the equation for the circuit's voltage gain in two different ways and then shows a simulation of an inverting amplifier circuit.
