In this talk, I will discuss the ease with which multilinguals learn additional languages and provide some answers to two main questions: What helps multilinguals to acquire new languages? And what are the consequences of having to manage multiple languages? I suggest five specific effects related to multilingualism which may ease subsequent learning of multiple languages.

Julia Festman is Full Professor of Multilingualism at the University College of Teacher Education Tyrol in Innsbruck/Austria. Her main research focus is on multilingualism on the individual, cognitive and educational level. She combines psycholinguistic, neurolinguistic and neuroscientific methods for investigating learning and processing of multiple languages as well as the teaching of languages and the idea of multilingualism as a resource in the classroom. She has a particular interest in the effects of multilingualism on cognition and in the bilingual advantage debate.

Julia Festman studied in Germany, was a teacher for German as a foreign language in France, did her PhD in Israel in the field of psycholinguistics and trilingualism in 2004. She lived and worked in the UK and in Germany at different universities before being appointed to her current position in Innsbruck.
