00:00 The 4 main misunderstandings of China explained in my new book "Can We Trust China?" https://amzn.to/3GWBR7x
00:44 FIRST MISUNDERSTANDING: China is a TOP-DOWN society and CCP is not legitimately elected by the people. The reality is that Chinese governance and CCP can exercise its power because of a very efficient decentralised, bottom-up meritocratic government. Those leaders and system are being legitimised by the support of 1+ billion people that form the bottom-up energy and strength that makes the job of the country's leader much easier.
05:47 SECOND MISUNDERSTANDING: China is a suppressive control state with no freedom for the people. The truth is that Chinese are more comfortable with societal rules than Westerners, which feel quite suitable for the reality of China. The main reason Chinese feel much more free than Westerners think is because they have gained many freedoms every year over the past 40 years that the West has taken for granted. As Chinese are often more curious in nature than many Westerners, they seek more freedoms than we give them credit for - but not necessarily the same as Western freedoms.
10:20 THIRD MISUNDERSTANDING: China is very rigid and guarded static society. But China and the system has really been in more change than any country or any government. A system that has evolved so quickly because it is is cyclical instead of a more linear evolution like in the West. There are moments of lots of (CPC) control and moments of experimentation. During the experimentation, creativity and innovation happens, and then a cycle of control follows to make sure it does not get out of hand. The main strength of the government and Party is its self-evaluation and self-correcting power, which allows for more reforms, change and prosperity faster than many places.
15:43 FORTH MISUNDERSTANDING: "China is a uniform, collective inhumane society". Looking back at thousands of years of China's culture, the society (including the government) is very much people-centric, family based 'guanxi' fabric. This relationship culture creates the trust between people and networks, and the CCP uses that bond between people to help all Chinese as individuals to achieve more prosperity and help them realise their dreams.
