U.S. healthcare is a nearly 4 trillion dollar market, and it just so happens to be the most ripe for disruption. If someone made you fill out a stack of paperwork, and wait 20 minutes before buying a television at a brick and mortar store, you would definitely go somewhere else. But this is the reality today of walking into a doctors office, and there are no strong alternatives yet. This is going to change soon, and this is where Amazon Care could come in.

Amazon has been laying the foundation for what could be a massive, one-stop-shop healthcare focused service for years. It launched Amazon Pharmacy in late 2020, completed a project with Crossover Health, and launched a personal health tracker called the Halo that lets users share data with EMRs.

Amazon Care is poised to launch across the U.S. this summer, offering people 24/7 access to medical care and advice.

Amazon Care launched 18 months ago with the mission to provide Amazon employees and their families immediate access to medical care. The service enables employees to quickly connect with medical professionals via chat or video conference and eliminates lengthy wait and travel times to get medical attention. Their offerings serve to bring the care to the patient, not the other way around, making it more convenient for the patient to schedule care as needed.

Amazon Care gives instant access to a range of urgent and primary care services, including flu testing, vaccinations, treatment of illnesses and injuries, preventive care, sexual health, prescription requests, refills, and delivery, and more.

Amazon does not disclose how many Prime members it has by country, but it’s estimated that 82% of US households have an Amazon Prime membership. This existing, captive audience would be a great way for Amazon to market additional services. With larger scale also comes the ability to negotiate discounts for consumers.

It's important to note that it their success with Amazon Care is not guaranteed. Its highly publicized partnership with JPMorgan and Berkshire Hathaway to run a healthcare venture called Haven shut down in January 2021 

If the company were to expand Amazon Care to the larger consumer population, their Pharmacy offerings would fit within Amazon Care offering by giving users the ability to order prescriptions and refills digitally. The tech giant could also add further capabilities to its smart home speaker Alexa to remind customers to take their medications (as a way to increase compliance of medication - which has been a longstanding issue) or allow customers to order prescription refills. All these services will help close the loop on providing care to patients more seamlessly by letting patients see physicians, get prescriptions, track their health, and schedule follow ups as needed to begin the process again.
