Why is the B-21 smaller than the B-2 stealth bomber? Let's go over each of the various reasons one by one. The D.O.D could only afford 21 B-2 bombers since they were so expensive, and were only used for bombing targets. Their function has somewhat diminished as a result of the war on terror, and the B-52 bomber, which is significantly less expensive, can now do the same function just as well. Each airframe costs less to manufacture and maintain if the B-21 is smaller. The main reasons for the next-generation bomber's cancellation in 2009 were financial and mission-specific considerations. Bombers are no longer limited to being just bombers. If they are to be useful at all, they must perform many more roles. The B-21 will probably play a key role in the sensor fusion system that the F-35s are a part of, because they can sit in enemy locations undetected for hours while monitoring the whole battlefield. Additionally, if a fighter this size can have such potent sensors installed, think of what a bomber could have. Back then, the B-2 was as small as they could make it; today, the B-21 is even more compact and represents a significant advancement.
