EPISODE DESCRIPTION

The Apache conflict with Mexico is changed when the United States occupies new territory following the Mexican-American War. Their greatest war chief, a giant of a man named Mangas Coloradas must determine if this new power friend or foe as their competing cultures lead him down a dangerous path.

The life of Mangas Coloradas is an interesting one in Apache history. Mexican records on Apache raids often lack the specifics of the the American military from the time of their conflict. But the sources lists below of done an excellent job of piecing together his life and tragic death. His importance to the Chiracahua is clear but at the time of his death in 1863, he was already over 70 years old. It is interesting to consider the role he would have played with other Apache like Cochise, Victorio, or Nana in the final stages of his life.

Mangas Coloradas has a reputation for being the greatest of the Apache war chiefs. In the episode I do my best to examine that part of his life in balance with what seems like a very introspective understanding that peace would be preferable. The Apache, as raiders, used the practice to secure their needs. There would have had to have been a significant cultural change for there ever to be lasting peace. Attempts were made by the Apache with treaties and agriculture but warrior culture, alcohol, a dependence on rations made conflict inevitable. And that is just from their side of the war. The American machine was rolling west and regardless of the attempts made at peace with the Native Americans there was likely no stopping manifest destiny from taking everything it had the power to take.

I hope you enjoy the episode and I did justice to the life of Mangas Coloradas and the Apache people.

***I mentioned in the video that I did an episode a while back about Geronimo and the contemptuous Apache relationship to Mexico. It is linked below if you want to check it out.
