Last time i was in an M5 it was 2018, which was when we first got the F90 generation
And today we’re driving the facelifted F90 as it enters the final year before the next generation..which should include hybridization. So thanks to International BMW for letting me have a go so we can have a proper look at what be the final non-electrified M5

The BMW M5, the golden example of what a luxury sports sedan can and maybe should be

The pedigree that comes with the M5 name is unparalleled

E39, E60, and F90

It’s hard not to like this car

It’s fast, sounds great, looks good, and has a great and practical interior

Let’s dive under the skin. The M5 gets the 4.4TT V8 S63 engine, but this is the Competition spec which means boost, and thus power, are dialed up to 617hp and 553 lbft and all that power goes through the tremendous shift logic that BMW has programmed into the ZF 8 speed that we’;re so familiar with

And not only that, but the sound that accompanies the power is UNreal

And it doesn’t even matter if it’s sunny or snowing, you’ve got standard xDrive AWD which gets all the power down

At least, until you want to play around

You have 4WD, 4WD sport, AND 2WD so technically, since you can send all the power to the back, does that make this a 4WD or 4x4?

If so, this is the fastest 4x4 I’ve ever driven!

Jokes aside, the capability and speed that you get from the M5 rivals supercars from even only a couple years ago. 0-60 in 3.2 seconds, adaptive sport suspension, M LSD differential, M brakes

And all that with 2 weeks worth of Costco groceries in the trunk and 2 kids in the back

The english coined a term for a car like this that fits properly: super saloon

And it is

It does obviously feel heavy
but it’s as sharp as a knife
Powerful as river rapids
Sounds like thunder

And yet…

All of that can be dailed down and relaxed to something that somehow still manages to be a plush, comfortable, luxury sedan

The balance that this car pulls off is unreal

Supposedly future 5 series will only be I6…except the M5
